# Course Settings

Learn what each course setting means.

{% hint style="success" %}
Course settings can be set when you create or copy a course, but they can also be changed later. Be aware, however, that some settings are not retroactive so it's best to set them from the beginning.
{% endhint %}

Actions related to any course are found in the course header, which is accessible from any of the course tabs.

<div align="left" data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="https://996964065-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FDPOKFePdZR4sBOpKc5Qc%2Fuploads%2FV38PHGFRze4h8hvoPNSt%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=1f9c9e9a-4ae7-4bd2-9ba8-1bc87f6e813c" alt="Course page with the course header outlined."><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

Click the More Actions menu (3 dots) in the upper right corner and choose Course Settings.

<div align="left" data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="https://colony-recorder.s3.amazonaws.com/files/2026-06-25/7877ba0f-ff32-4182-b434-78e849aee224/user_cropped_screenshot_204b88d9839d4b7bb32002b4dbf65419_text_export.jpeg" alt="More Actions menu with the Course Settings option visible." width="375"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

This will open up the side panel to allow you to edit the settings for that specific course. There are 3 sections: Details, Preferences, and Student Experience.

<div data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="https://996964065-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FDPOKFePdZR4sBOpKc5Qc%2Fuploads%2F9GhFRIUa2GhVQfaZqcfk%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=e21b4a88-6b28-43d7-9fbf-8b44da874488" alt="Course Settings side panel showing the Details, Preferences, and Student Experience sections."><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

## Course Settings - Details

<div align="left" data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="https://996964065-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FDPOKFePdZR4sBOpKc5Qc%2Fuploads%2FOKXQ0dSVEyCLFpiJZvlN%2FScreenshot%202026-06-25%20at%206.35.26%E2%80%AFPM.png?alt=media&amp;token=14887d1f-67ac-4c09-ba33-249ab57b32ec" alt="Course Settings Details section with course title, section title, campus, dates, and restrictions options." width="301"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

### Course and Section Title

You can edit the Course and Section names. Remember, each course must have a unique combination of the two.

If you have multiple sections of the same course, be sure the course name is exactly the same if you want to be able to see reports across the course. You will then just use a different section name for each.

It's important to have a naming convention that you're following for your institution.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Learn more:** [Naming Conventions](/instructor-experience/getting-started/best-practices/naming-conventions.md)
{% endhint %}

### Campus

If you only have one **Campus**, it will be Default. If you have multiple campuses, you can click the dropdown to select a different campus.

### Course Start Date and Course End Date

Click the calendar icon to change the start date/time if necessary, then click **Apply**.

<div align="left" data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="https://996964065-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FDPOKFePdZR4sBOpKc5Qc%2Fuploads%2FrtGM4D1hht9KggFZoxOV%2FScreenshot%202026-06-25%20at%206.59.53%E2%80%AFPM.png?alt=media&amp;token=fadb37e6-65ec-4abc-9681-b50de2ebdc67" alt="Course start date picker with date and time fields and an Apply button." width="231"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

The end date is usually the end of your term, but you can choose any date you like. After that date, students will no longer see the course.

Note: This will not prevent them from later accessing their library of SIMbooks for extended access.

Click the calendar icon to change the end date/time if necessary, then click **Apply**.

<div align="left" data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="https://996964065-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FDPOKFePdZR4sBOpKc5Qc%2Fuploads%2F1C2qBeYlbBTgVhqAiuWS%2FScreenshot%202026-06-25%20at%207.00.08%E2%80%AFPM.png?alt=media&amp;token=5970e552-a14f-40ba-b211-945a3a1afb9d" alt="Course end date picker with date and time fields and an Apply button." width="240"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

### Restrictions

**Restrictions** allow you to control access to enrollment and viewing of course assignments.

* **Restrict enrollment before start date** prevents students from being able to enroll in the course before the course start date.
* **Restrict enrollment after end date** prevents students from inadvertently enrolling in a course that has ended.
* **Restrict viewing of course assignments before the start date** prevents students from accessing assignments before the course start date.
* **Restrict viewing of course assignments after the end date** prevents students from re-accessing their course materials after the course has ended. Restricting the viewing of course materials will not keep students from being able to review their SIMbooks in their library after the course is complete.

## Course Settings - Preferences

<div align="left" data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="https://996964065-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FDPOKFePdZR4sBOpKc5Qc%2Fuploads%2Fmh48Nur3pCKZWTqvT15R%2FScreenshot%202026-06-25%20at%206.35.38%E2%80%AFPM.png?alt=media&amp;token=c18cb36c-10bb-435c-8de9-ae65cbf623bc" alt="Course Settings Preferences section with registration, template, courtesy access, and zero grade options." width="299"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

### Registration Closed

Check the box next to **Registration Closed** if you do not want students to be able to self-register for their SIMnet account.

### LTIA ACP Template

If you are using the Auto-Copy-Pair process to copy courses out to others and this is a template course, the box needs to be checked.

### Course Courtesy Access

Course Courtesy Access is typically set at the account level and not editable here.

### Assign Zero Grade On

This allows you to choose when to **assign a zero grade** for assignments. That can be on the assignment due date, the assignment end date, the course end date, or you can not assign zeros at all and enter them manually. It's important to set this before adding any assignments as it is not retroactive.

<div align="left" data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="https://996964065-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FDPOKFePdZR4sBOpKc5Qc%2Fuploads%2FKdB1jzg3lR0DcKQKf1OS%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=cca89397-c088-4b00-8ea3-a923448cca62" alt="Assign Zero Grade On dropdown showing assignment date options." width="260"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

## Course Settings - Student Experience

These settings control certain aspects of how the student views assignments.

### Sorting

<div align="left" data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="https://996964065-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FDPOKFePdZR4sBOpKc5Qc%2Fuploads%2FLVGFEzlOThwIbcAKFbdP%2FScreenshot%202026-06-25%20at%206.36.41%E2%80%AFPM.png?alt=media&amp;token=762ab5b5-3bea-4145-a93c-98476f11f6e0" alt="Student Experience Sorting settings with assignment sort order options." width="302"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

**Sorting** determines the order in which assignments are displayed. Change the Sort order in the dropdown if desired.

The options are to sort by

* Due Date: First to Last or Last to First
* Start Date: First to Last or Last to First
* End Date: First to Last or Last to First
* Title: A-Z or Z-A
* Custom Order: The order is set by moving assignments in the Organize view

### Display

<div align="left" data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="https://996964065-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FDPOKFePdZR4sBOpKc5Qc%2Fuploads%2FoxOKyD2YkorVKovKqLe7%2FScreenshot%202026-06-25%20at%206.37.45%E2%80%AFPM.png?alt=media&amp;token=68bdd55c-09c1-41d3-8270-dfdbd72416d7" alt="Student Experience Display settings with tile, list, calendar, and gradebook options." width="287"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

Assignments can be displayed to students in multiple ways.

Display by tiles is the default SIMnet view, but all views are enabled. Students can change the view according to their preference.

* The Tile option displays every assignment as an individual tile, color coded by assignment type.
* The List option displays every assignment as a single list.
* The Calendar option displays a monthly calendar with each assignment on the calendar organized by Start, Due, or End-date.

**Show unavailable assignments** is unchecked by default. Checking the box will allow students to see assignments that have not reached their start date or are past their end date. This option will not supersede any Restrictions set above.

You can choose to **hide the student gradebook** if you are not doing any grading in SIMnet.

### Status

<div align="left" data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="https://996964065-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FDPOKFePdZR4sBOpKc5Qc%2Fuploads%2FIgWTCylAL591e0k2SoQL%2FScreenshot%202026-06-25%20at%206.38.10%E2%80%AFPM.png?alt=media&amp;token=b7abfc80-8b85-431e-8dad-1a70d019aa69" alt="Student Experience Status settings with assignment status filter checkboxes." width="301"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

Status allows students to filter by different statuses in their assignment list. This is checked for all by default.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://help.simnetonline.com/instructor-experience/creating-and-managing-courses/course-snapshot/course-settings.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
