# Create Campus

Learn the essential steps to create a new campus and define its specific settings.

<a href="https://media.gaspar.mheducation.com/GASPARPlayer/play.html?id=97cCSipX539WJNL0G1usGZP" class="button primary" data-icon="play">Play Video</a>Right click to open the video in a new tab.

{% hint style="success" %}
New accounts are typically set up with one default campus. If your school shares a URL and you have multiple campuses, you may want to create additional campuses.
{% endhint %}

1\. To create a new campus, click Create Campus.

<div data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="https://colony-recorder.s3.amazonaws.com/files/2026-05-15/6f1b0e65-7740-43fb-b59d-904bf0a5335d/user_cropped_screenshot_19fc909d4ae3431ab4c99a00f3d623a1_text_export.jpeg" alt="Campuses tab showing the Create Campus button above the campus list, with an arrow pointing to Create Campus."><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

2\. Enter the Campus Name. This must be unique to your account.

Campus settings will be inherited by every course created in that campus. However, those individual course settings can be changed as needed.

<div data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="https://colony-recorder.s3.amazonaws.com/files/2026-05-15/1a99a8d9-e88c-4e5e-b0f7-70035958e775/user_cropped_screenshot_a84827ee28014a8da086da93a370cb54_text_export.jpeg" alt="Create Campus side panel with the Campus Name field ready for entry, with an arrow pointing to the Campus Name field."><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

3\. Set the grading preference for when to assign a zero grade for assignments. That can be on the assignment due date, the assignment end date, the course end date, or you can not assign zeros at all and enter them manually.

<div data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="https://colony-recorder.s3.amazonaws.com/files/2026-05-15/006caff7-61ba-4b2b-ad42-e6d901a14b07/user_cropped_screenshot_1e215e2c1a924b389c09aca2f7007a6d_text_export.jpeg" alt="Create Campus settings showing the Assign a zero grade options for overdue work, with an arrow pointing to the zero grade setting."><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

4\. Sorting determines the order in which assignments are displayed.

The default setting is to order by Due Date, First to Last, allowing students to view assignments in the order they need to complete them.

<div data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="https://colony-recorder.s3.amazonaws.com/files/2026-05-15/13eafe72-edb1-4650-9162-33ec3cf9bbdc/user_cropped_screenshot_6196bcf3a6a7459ebef008329bf3c8a6_text_export.jpeg" alt="Create Campus settings with Sorting set to Due Date, First to Last, with an arrow pointing to the Sorting setting."><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

5\. The other options are to sort by Start Date or End Date, Title, or Custom Order.

The Custom Order option means that the order that is set by moving assignments in the Organize view will stay in place.

<div data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="https://colony-recorder.s3.amazonaws.com/files/2026-04-21/ab34be2b-44a0-4b80-ae63-b176a515e7f2/File_5380aa3e34c448f59ce405b62a1a504e_text_export.jpeg" alt="Create Campus settings showing alternate Sorting options such as Start Date, End Date, Title, and Custom Order, with arrows pointing to the available sorting choices."><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

6\. Assignments can be displayed to students in multiple ways.

Display by tiles is the default SIMnet view, but all views are enabled. Students can change the view according to their preference.

* The Tile option displays every assignment as an individual tile, color coded by assignment type.
* The List option displays every assignment as a single list.
* The Calendar option displays a monthly calendar with each assignment on the calendar organized by Start, Due, or End-date.

<div data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="https://colony-recorder.s3.amazonaws.com/files/2026-05-15/826e6777-0b17-453b-849e-bd9212ccc04b/user_cropped_screenshot_cbd9ffb786c94b5bace767fd54f69bcf_text_export.jpeg" alt="Create Campus settings showing Display options for Tile, List, and Calendar views, with arrows pointing to the display choices."><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

7\. Show unavailable assignments is unchecked by default. Checking the box will allow students to see assignments that have not reached their start date or are past their end date. This option will not supersede any Restrictions set below.

<div data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="https://colony-recorder.s3.amazonaws.com/files/2026-05-15/52fba929-01bd-4660-a759-fea2a5586bc8/user_cropped_screenshot_5965021b335f4ce9aedc8197331feeb6_text_export.jpeg" alt="Create Campus settings showing the Show unavailable assignments checkbox, with an arrow pointing to the checkbox."><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

8\. Status allows students to filter by different statuses in their assignment list. This is checked for all by default.

<div data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="https://colony-recorder.s3.amazonaws.com/files/2026-05-15/28d17b62-6b76-4920-b5f9-9f9d8b948fb1/user_cropped_screenshot_c9577b322e2047e8b5a90370b9c07ac0_text_export.jpeg" alt="Create Campus settings showing assignment Status filter options, with arrows pointing to the status choices."><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

9\. Restrictions allow you to control access to enrollment and viewing of course assignments.

* Restrict enrollment before start date prevents students from being able to enroll in the course before the course start date.
* Restrict enrollment after end date prevents students from inadvertently enrolling in a course that has ended.
* Restrict viewing of course assignments before the start date prevents students from accessing assignments before the course start date.
* Restrict viewing of course assignments after the end date prevents students from re-accessing their course materials after the course has ended. Restricting the viewing of course materials will not keep students from being able to review their SIMbooks in their library after the course is complete.

<div data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="https://colony-recorder.s3.amazonaws.com/files/2026-05-15/0dd6a96d-9a09-44a8-882e-4af76f177569/user_cropped_screenshot_2be19fd7619e4b048b2ba0761267ea07_text_export.jpeg" alt="Create Campus settings showing Restrictions for enrollment dates and assignment visibility, with arrows pointing to the restriction options."><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

10\. Click Save and continu&#x65;**.**

<div data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="https://colony-recorder.s3.amazonaws.com/files/2026-05-15/6ca16de7-52ec-4eee-9dbd-905b54643917/user_cropped_screenshot_4f2d3f50b82340608e60e73a321639f8_text_export.jpeg" alt="Create Campus side panel with the Save and continue button in the lower-right corner, with an arrow pointing to Save and continue."><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

11\. Assigning a textbook to a campus allows instructors to assign content from the textbook. The list of textbooks controls which textbooks are available in the content lists, as a textbook filter when creating lessons and exams, and which lessons are available to students in the Study Materials section of the Library.

<div data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="https://colony-recorder.s3.amazonaws.com/files/2026-04-21/97d09187-01ab-4e64-9ec0-005d73725b20/File_8f0f6a957a944493a83f36b1716b348e_text_export.jpeg" alt="Add Textbooks side panel listing textbooks available to assign to the campus, with arrows highlighting the textbook area."><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

12\. Select the checkbox for each textbook you wish to make available to courses at your campus. Click Add Textbooks in the lower-right corner.

<div data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="https://colony-recorder.s3.amazonaws.com/files/2026-05-15/36ff116b-fb86-4f36-ba11-3516da710a7f/user_cropped_screenshot_a8e1b05da69342428e4a958246f4cb5a_text_export.jpeg" alt="Add Textbooks panel with textbook checkboxes and the Add Textbooks button, with arrows pointing to the selections and Add Textbooks."><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

13\. You will receive a confirmation that the campus and textbooks were added. You can add or remove textbooks from a campus at any time by returning to the Campus tab and clicking on the Textbooks icon.

<div data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="https://colony-recorder.s3.amazonaws.com/files/2026-05-15/ca4d3fe2-7202-4772-aed0-bb01ccf703f0/user_cropped_screenshot_87ff73ef83f84ebf85b88984919f0995_text_export.jpeg" alt="Confirmation message showing the campus and selected textbooks were added successfully, with an arrow highlighting the confirmation."><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://help.simnetonline.com/instructor-experience/admin-settings/admin-settings-campuses/create-campus.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
