Did you know about SIMnet’s built in fraud detection? SIMnet projects have the technology to determine when one student passes off another’s work as their own! When a student downloads a project start file, that file includes the student’s name and data within the file make it unique. If 13th century English monarch and mother to two kings Cecily Neville took the SIMnet Excel 2013 Capstone Level 1 project, her start file would look like this:
Cecily could not share her file with King Edward IV so that he could pass it off as his own.
New for Fall 2015, SIMnet can now detect if elements within a file have been copied and pasted from other files. In the past, attempting to upload another student’s file would cause an academic integrity violation. In other words, trying to pass another student’s work off as your own would be caught as cheating. Now even sharing parts of a file will be caught as cheating. Details about Copied Elements is available in the Academic Integrity Violation Report. This feature now available for Word and Excel Projects.

As the fall semester begins, we would like to familiarize you with the new projects start screen. After you’ve navigated to your project, you’ll see a screen that looks a whole lot like this:
It outlines the three major steps to successfully completing a project – downloading your files, saving your files back to SIMnet, and grading your file. Other than actually doing your project, that’s about it!
There are two basic ways you can go about completing step 1.
Under 1. Download Files you will see the link, open the File Download Wizard. Click this link to open the Download Wizard. The Download Wizard will automatically download your start file. This is the file that you will do your work on. Make sure you actually know where your browser sends your files! It’s typically to your Downloads folder. If the start file doesn’t download, click the click here link to download it.
If you’re using a Mac this will look a little bit different for projects that support Office for Mac 2011 and/or Office for Mac 2016 . The Download Wizard will detect if you have downloaded your file on a Mac, and offer you the option to selectOffice for Mac 2011 if you have Office for Mac 2011 on your computer. Select Office for Mac 2016 if you have Office for Mac 2016 installed on your computer. If you need help deciding which version of Office for Mac you have, just check the Determining your Mac for Office Version section at the bottom of this post!
On any machine, after you’ve downloaded your start file, click the Download Instruction File button to download the Instruction File, which tells you how to work on your start file. ALWAYS follow the directions that you download in the instruction file instead of following the instructions in the printed book.
Sometimes a project requires Resource Files. On projects that require you to insert an image, or import a file, the next step will be to click the Download Resource Bundle button. This will download a .zip file filled with important resource files. Check the Best Practices document to learn how to use .zip files.
Then download the Solution File, (if your instructor makes it available) and Best Practices documents if you’d like to use them. Click the Solution File button and the Best Practices button. We strongly recommend reading theBest Practices before doing your first project. After that you should be a pro!
If you don’t want those files, click the Skip button. If you’ve downloaded all the available files, that button turns to Next before you click it. Click Close and now you’re ready to open your files.
As you can see below, there are also a number of links besides the open the File Download Wizard. links in the 1. Download Files section. You can use these instead of the wizard if you prefer!
All you need to do is select the links for you to download the files you’ll need. Select the optional files that you’d like to view. The Solution File can always be helpful. The Best Practices file is a must read before you start your first project.
Select the correct instruction file for your machine. If you are working on a Windows computer, select Office for Windows. If you’re working on one of the many projects approved for Office for Mac, and you are using a Mac, select the link for you. If you have Office for Mac 2011 click the Office for Mac 2011 link. If you have Office for Mac 2016, click Office for Mac 2016. If you are using a Mac and need help determining which version of Office for Mac you’re using just scroll to the last section in this post!
Next, click the All office versions link in the Start File (required) section to download your start file.
Sometimes a project requires Resource Files. On projects that require you to insert an image, or import a file, the next step will be to click the All office versions link in the Resources (required) section. This will download a .zip file filled with important resource files. Check the Best Practices document to learn how to use .zip files.
Open your downloaded files. Follow the Instructions to edit your Start File. Use any Resources as instructed. Complete all instructions carefully!
Once you have finished your project, you need to upload & save it to SIMnet. Click the Upload my file button, select your file, and click Open. This will replace any file that was previously uploaded for this project. The Submit Uploaded File? wizard lets you grade your file immediately by clicking Yes, submit the file. You can also use the Upload & Save feature to save your work online, to retrieve later. Click No, I’m not ready. Once you’ve uploaded your file, download it again from the Current File section.
If you selected No, I’m not ready. in step 3, click the Grade my file button to submit your project for grading. After your project has been graded, look for the eye icon for results that are available. Click the Attempt link to view past results.
If you are using a Mac, some of the 2013 projects have been adapted for use with Office 2011 for Mac and Office 2016 for Mac. For Mac supported projects, follow the correct version of the project instructions for your version of Office for Mac. To check your version, open Word, Excel, or PowerPoint. To see your version, choose the Word menu and click About Word; the Excel menu and click About Excel; or the PowerPoint menu and click About PowerPoint.
If the number after Version is less than 15, select Office for Mac 2011 when downloading instructions. If the number after Version is 15 or greater, select the instructions for Office for Mac 2016.

The Freeze Grades after Due Date option is designed to allow students to continue to use their Lesson and SIMbook assignments as a study aid after the assignment has become past due. When a gradebook column is frozen the student’s grade will not improve even if the student continues to complete tasks in the Lesson or SIMbook. The new option is available from the assignment and column configuration view:
When a gradebook column option is set to freeze after the due date and the due date has passed a snowflake icon will display in the column header to indicate the grades will no longer automatically update.
Modifying the freeze grade setting and/or due date will automatically adjust all student scores in the column appropriately based on tasks they completed prior to the due date.
A new button at the bottom right hand corner of the gradebook displays a legend that defines the different icons in use.
By default an Exam or Project Personal Assignment will automatically transfer the result to the class gradebook (if available).
The question and task picker now defaults to textbook instead of module.
The question and task selection module filter now includes an objective type option. This is to support new objective type filtering in a future release.
Deleting a SIMpath lesson result only deletes the lesson result instead of both the Pre-Test and the Lesson result.
SIMnet now has the ability to detect if a student has copied elements of a document from another student’s file and pasted them into their file. This is in addition to detecting if a student submits another student’s file for grading. Details about the copied elements are available in the Academic Integrity Violation Report. This feature is now available for Skills Word 2013 and IP Word 2013 projects.

Have you considered becoming a ? Have you heard that becoming MOS certified is a thing? The basic idea is simple: if you pass a test created by Microsoft, you gain a resume boost.
Microsoft has created a series of exams that test your ability to use various Microsoft Office programs, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access. Once you pass these exams you get an official certificate. Many people write in their resume that they are proficient in Microsoft Office programs but the MOS certification is proof.
The exams aren’t free – so you want to make sure that you’re ready before you dive in. Fortunately SIMnet has you covered. A SIMnet user recently wrote to us:
I just finished taking the MOS Word 2013 certification exam, and I passed with flying colors. I owe that more than anything to the learning and practice I’ve had with SIMnet.
SIMnet covers the skills that I used in the exam, and provided many different ways to practice them. There wasn’t a moment where I wasn’t sure about how to do something. What’s more, SIMnet breaks skills down in a very clear way, so I always knew exactly what the exam was asking for.
What I didn’t expect was how much SIMnet Projects in particular would prepare me for the certification exam. The two are very similar, so I barely noticed the transition from SIMnet to the exam. In some ways, it felt like just doing another SIMnet project! Once I realized that, any anxiety I had disappeared.
SIMnet had me so well prepared, I can’t wait to tackle the next one! All I need to do for practice is log in to SIMnet and work through the lessons and exams. It couldn’t be easier.

We all have spare moments where we’d like to be a bit more productive. A SIMnet user recently told us about her experience using SIMnet on the train:
I used my LG G2 Android phone to study for the Microsoft Office Specialist Access certification exam while on the 45-minute train ride to work. I was able to access the SIMbook using the Google Chrome application for Android, provided there was an internet signal available. I was pleasantly surprised how easy it was to use on a format much smaller compared to a tablet or desktop. I was able to log in, navigate to my class, and open the SIMbook with no problems. Once in the SIMbook, I was able to easily navigate through the Skills and Chapters. I could view the Show Mes with little difficulty as they were large enough to read the text on the screen, and the audio was crisp and clear. It was extremely beneficial being able to study on the go without having to juggle devices. I was able to just use my phone and keep on going with great ease. I would definitely recommend using the phone for accessing the SIMbook content.

Microsoft held a press event today to detail a number of its plans for the year, including offering new details about its next major operating system update, Windows 10. The theme of the presentation is that it will be easier than ever for developers to create apps that work across a wide array of devices, from PCs to phones to the Xbox One.
One important note is that, for a year after it launches, Windows 10 will be a free upgrade to anyone running Windows 7 or 8. This is big news for a company that used to charge full price for version updates.
On the Office front, the new version of Office will run in a mostly unified manner across PC, tablets, and phones. This means you won’t lose much functionality no matter which device you access the suite of apps on.
Check out for a rundown of the 9 biggest announcements from the Windows 10 event.

Microsoft recentlyfrom Word, Excel and Powerpoint. Instead, all online image searches will use Bing while PowerPoint will add videos from YouTube. We are updating SIMnet to reflect the way your students interact with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
The changes Microsoft made to inserting images, audio, and video are as follows:
Inserting Online Pictures in Word, Excel, and, PowerPoint now uses Bing Image Search as the primary method for finding images online (searching from Office.com is no longer available). The search results use the . Simply, the Creative Commons allows for non-commercial use of copyrighted images. A discussion of the Creative Commons licenses can be a productive way to think about copyright issues online.
Inserting online audio is currently unavailable in PowerPoint. When you open the Insert Audio dialog, you will see a message informing you that PowerPoint cannot connect to your services and to try again later. At this time, it is unclear if or when this service will be available again.
You can no longer insert video in PowerPoint through a Bing Video Search. You can upload directly from your OneDrive; search YouTube; or paste an embed code from another website.
The following changes are being made to SIMnet:
All current “live in the application” projects that use clip art are being rewritten to use another method.
SIMbook pages that refer to Office.com clip art are being updated to notify users that the content has been updated since the original publication. In addition, some pages will be updated to include other ways to add clip art to documents and presentations.
Let Me Try steps will reflect the old method of adding Office.com clip art. A note will be added to the relevant page directing the student to the steps to use to successfully complete the exercise.
Simulated questions that refer to Office.com clip art will no longer be available to add to exams. However, any of these questions that currently exist in exams will continue to be valid.
While this fix is being finalized we suggest that you show your students the new Online Pictures dialog. The differences in the way the students interact with the applications is minimal – they still enter their search terms in the text box and select results. The only differences are what the name of the box actually is and the quality of the results that they will get back.
